I n дело, поступок, деяние Русскому поступок, дело соответствуют английские act и action. Act обозначает единичный поступок, само действие в момент его совершения и обычно употребляется с каким-либо определением:an act of kindness — доброе дело;
an act of cruelty — проявление жестокости;

an act of self-defence — действие самозащиты;
to catch smb in the act of stealing — поймать кого-либо в момент совершения кражи.
Существительное action не связано с единичностью действия и обозначает действия, деятельность, поступки, а не единичный поступок:to judge smb by his actions — судить о ком-либо по его делам;
